Bioavailability is the proportion of a substance that enters circulation and is able to have an active effect when introduced into the body. In simple terms: it is how much of what you take actually gets used.

A product with 50mg of CBD and 10% bioavailability delivers approximately 5mg of active CBD to your system. A product with 25mg of CBD and 40% bioavailability delivers approximately 10mg — twice as much active cannabinoid at half the stated dose.

Label potency is not the same as delivered potency. Formulation determines the difference.

Cannabinoids are lipophilic — they dissolve in fat, not water. This has profound implications for formulation science.

The carrier oil or lipid system used in a cannabinoid product directly determines how well cannabinoids are absorbed. Not all carrier oils are equal. Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), for example, are rapidly metabolized and have been shown to enhance cannabinoid absorption compared to long-chain fatty acid carriers.
